The third day of Badger Boys State began with the first day of schools of instruction. In these sessions, the citizens learn about topics ranging from current environmental issues to how to be an influential and effective leader. Each citizen picks three of the seven schools to attend and will go through three sessions of each school. Here, citizens in the school of public speaking are analyzing a speech they heard the night before.
After the schools of instruction, the citizens who were running for certain positions were required to attend an informational session on what it means to hold such a title. Students who were not running for one of the nine positions could attend any of the sessions available. Here, citizens listen to Counselor Riley speak about his experience with one of the positions.
One very important role at Badger Boys State is that of the state trooper. The 16 men (one commander, one deputy commander and 14 troopers) appointed to this position by members of the Badger Boys State staff are responsible for monitoring in the dining hall while their fellow citizens eat and patrol the outside of the dormitories for a short amount of time after the rest of the citizens go to sleep. Here, Wayne Jensen, assistant director of security, speaks to this year's state troopers about their duties and expectations.
Today, the citizens had their first elections for city-level positions. The election committee was responsible for the logistics of it and helped their fellow citizens with the process of voting. Here, citizens are casting their ballots as members of the election committee validates their selections.
Charles Wiley spent his last day at Badger Boys State talking about how the news media affected the war in Vietnam. Reportedly Wiley's most engaging speech he gives while at Badger Boys State, the citizens learn about his relationships with Russian spies and getting arrested by the KGB, among many other stories. Here, students are locked into Wiley's words as he recounts his days reporting on the war.
As the weather became warmer today, the citizens were even more excited to get outside and play sports. Each county has a team for each sport and the teams will be competing all week against each other. At the end of the session, the athletic director will announce which teams placed first, second and third among each other for each sport. Here, one citizen is blocking the other from catching the ball.
At tonight's general assembly, all city mayors and state troopers took the oath of office. The keynote speaker for the night, J.B. Van Hollen, seen here, speaks to the citizens about how to build leadership and prepare it for tomorrow.
